First cut is the deepest?

I seem to recall this was a Cat Stevens song? My old mum used to like Cat Stevens, but that is another story, so let’s have a chat about cutting your lawn.

To begin, do not cut the grass too short. This seems to be a growing trend over the past few years, however, it is not beneficial. Longer grass protects the roots in a hot summer. It keeps the grass healthy and able to withstand the heat even though there may be a little yellowing. Each cut removes important nitrate, potash and phosphate – these are key to a healthy lawn. Plus, the end result of cutting grass too short is a big welcome to moss!

In wintertime, after the winter treatment, just leave it. The growth will slow naturally and there will not be much. As spring arrives, avoid the lure of cutting too early. Spring is when the grass starts to recover and prepare for summer. Again cutting will remove the nutrients the grass needs for a lovely summer lawn!

The Ideal for your lawn is 10cm in the summer, and longer in winter. If possible, leave the first cut until mid-March, especially if it’s been a wet winter. Keep your lawn healthy with regular treatments and above all keep an eye on it during the growing season.

To wrap this up, as I started with a popular song, let’s end with a minor misquote from another! “Let it grow Let it grow” (from Frozen ) is not bad guidance, and try and avoid walking on it when it’s frozen or snow covered too…
